BREAKING THE FAST TOGETHER: EMBRACING COMPASSION IN DIVERSITY
Sekolah Global Mandiri Cibubur is widely known as an educational institution that upholds the values of diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect. The holy month of Ramadan becomes a meaningful moment for students to experience the beauty of togetherness within diversity. Through the activity of breaking the fast together, students gather, share happiness, and learn to live harmoniously alongside friends who may come from different faith backgrounds. Many of the students are still young and are beginning to understand the deeper meaning of Indonesia’s motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), values such as compassion, kindness, and mutual respect are taught as values that will grow and guide them in the future
Teaching students to accept and appreciate differences is certainly not an easy task. For this reason, the support of families, educators, and the adults around them plays a vital role. The example set by parents and teachers becomes a powerful source of inspiration and motivation for children as they develop attitudes of tolerance, empathy, and respect for others.
As expressed by Ki Hajar Dewantara, the Father of Indonesian Education:
“Teachers should not only provide the knowledge that is necessary and beneficial, but they must also educate students to seek knowledge on their own and use it for the common good. Good and necessary knowledge is knowledge that benefits both the physical and spiritual aspects of life within society.” (translated)
