“SIHIR LIMBAH: From Waste to Art – Year 6 Students Turn Waste into Creativity”
Year 6 Students Turn Waste into Creativity, Performance, and Meaningful Action
Waste management is one of the environmental challenges that requires our attention and collective action. Improperly managed waste can pollute the environment and threaten the sustainability of our planet. However, many discarded materials still have the potential to be reused and transformed into something creative, useful, and valuable.
Recognising the importance of environmental awareness, Year 6 students of Sekolah Global Mandiri initiated an inspiring project entitled “SIHIR LIMBAH: From Waste to Art.” The project encouraged students to see waste differently, not as something to throw away, but as a resource that can be transformed through creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
From Inspiration to Creation
The journey of Sihir Limbah began in Term 1 when the Year 6 students participated in a field trip to ATMI Studio, a creative workshop and learning laboratory located on the campus of Politeknik ATMI Cikarang, West Java.
During the field trip, students had the opportunity to explore creativity, discover different ways of working with materials, and experience how ideas can be transformed into meaningful creations. It became an important starting point for developing their awareness of the potential of discarded materials.
Inspired by this experience, students continued exploring the relationship between creativity and environmental responsibility. They learned that items often considered useless could have a second life with imagination and willingness to innovate.
Turning Waste into Art

Through the project, students worked collaboratively to transform various discarded materials into creative products and artistic displays. Through hands-on activities, they explored how waste could be reused and given a new purpose.
Their creations included decorative accessories made from recycled materials, innovative crafts using plastic bottle caps and bottles, and other artistic products that demonstrated the value of reusing everyday items.

Beyond creating physical products, students also developed their communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and creative-thinking skills. They learned to share responsibilities, exchange ideas, and work together towards a sustainable goal.
Bringing the Message to the Stage

The highlight of Sihir Limbah was a creative performance that combined music, dance, and drama to deliver an important environmental message.
Through an engaging musical drama, students presented the problems caused by irresponsible waste disposal and highlighted the importance of taking action to protect our environment. The performance brought the message to life, showing how small everyday actions can contribute greatly to a cleaner and healthier planet.
The stage became a place where students could express their creativity while communicating a meaningful message to the audience: waste should not always be seen as the end of a product’s usefulness. With creativity and responsibility, it can become the beginning of something new.
The event also featured an exhibition of students’ handmade creations, allowing visitors to appreciate their work and discover how discarded materials could be transformed into artistic and functional objects.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
More than just an art and performance project, Sihir Limbah provided students with valuable learning experiences beyond the classroom. It connected environmental awareness with creativity, collaboration, communication, and character development.
Through this project, students practised the values of independence, creativity, communication, and collaboration (Kemandirian, Kreativitas, komunikasi, dan Kolaborasi). They experienced how working together could turn simple ideas into meaningful accomplishments.
Most importantly, students were encouraged to understand that preserving the environment is a shared responsibility. Sustainable habits begin with simple choices, such as reducing waste, reusing materials, and thinking carefully before throwing things away.
A Little Magic Can Make a Big Difference
The Sihir Limbah project reminds us that creativity has the power to change the way we see the world. What may appear to be worthless can become something beautiful and meaningful when given a second chance.
Through their creations and performances, Year 6 students demonstrated that environmental responsibility can be expressed in many ways—through art, music, movement, and everyday actions.
Because sometimes, the greatest magic is not creating something from nothing, but transforming what we already have into something meaningful.
