Decoding Our City: When Geography Becomes a Design Challenge

Have you ever wondered what the hidden stories behind the numbers in our neighborhood really mean? Instead of simply staring at dusty textbooks and memorizing abstract facts, the students recently embarked on a fascinating investigative project. They were challenged to step into the shoes of data scientists and designers, turning dry demographic statistics into visually captivating, meaningful stories about the people living right around us.
The Demography Detectives
Over the course of three exciting weeks, Mr. Saefi challenged his Geography class to become demographic detectives. The mission kicked off with an active brainstorming session, where the young learners eagerly discussed the various factors that shape a population’s quality—from education and health to the local economy.
But they didn’t stop at classroom theory. In the second week, the students rolled up their sleeves and dove deep into official population statistics, focusing specifically on the actual data of Kelurahan Bendan Duwur. They meticulously processed raw numbers and crafted thoughtful narrative analyses using Pages.
By the third week, the real magic happened in the classroom. The students transformed their complex, hard-earned findings into stunning, one-page infographics using Keynote. They designed beautiful charts showcasing population growth, mapped out age structures, and highlighted crucial demographic metrics, ultimately sharing their masterpieces in a lively class presentation.
Behind the Canvas of Creativity

Under the thoughtful guidance of Mr. Saefi, this project was far more than a standard geography assignment. It was a remarkable journey into Real-World Engagement. By investigating the actual living conditions and statistics of a real neighborhood, the students tackled a meaningful Real-world task that connects directly to the society they live in.
They didn’t just accept the data at face value; they practiced profound Critical Thinking and rigorous Data analysis to draw logical, well-reasoned conclusions from a sea of numbers. Furthermore, as they translated their rigorous research into visually appealing Keynote infographics, they powerfully honed their Communication and Creation skills. Designing these digital posters wasn’t merely about making things look attractive; it was an intricate Original creation process. They had to strategize on how to best convey complex geographical dynamics to an Authentic audience of their peers during their final presentations, ensuring every chart and highlight told a compelling truth.
